FIELD HOCKEY PENALTIES
Introduction:
A three tier system of cards is used for suspensions and warnings. They include red card, green card and a yellow card. Green card is used for signaling a warning. A yellow card is used as a way of temporary suspension of the player, similar to that observed in rugby football. Yellow card is normally used for a minimum duration of 5 minutes, without taking into consideration the substitution. In some modes, shorter suspension periods are applied which include indoor modes. These are mainly based on the local rules. Just as in the case of an association football, a red card indicates the permanent suspension from the rest of the hockey game. In majority of the circumstances, a player also gets banned for a particular period of time.
Miscellaneous:
Apart from football, the player also may get a yellow card or a green card. However, if the same offence gets repeated, the players cannot get two cards of the same colour. In such cases, the second card shown is always a more severe card. In case, a player gets a second yellow card for different rule breach, the temporary suspension comprise of a longer duration as compared to the first.
Role of Umpires in Penalties:
In case of dissent by a player, the umpires have the right to increase the free hit to a level of up to 10 meters, for showing dissent or any other misconduct, after the awarding of the penalty. In case, the free hit is in the attacking 23 meters, the penalty can be upgraded to the penalty corner.
