HOCKEY
About Hockey: Hockey is a sport in which two rival teams compete against each other by maneuvering the ball or a round hard disk, which is known as puck into the goal or net of the opponent, with the help of a hockey stick. The predominant form of hockey in a specific place is most commonly known by the name hockey. There are numerous varieties of hockey played in various regions of the world. In the American nations, namely Canada and USA, ice hockey is more popular, whereas in the Indian subcontinent, the field hockey is the most popular variety. Field Hockey: Filed hockey is mainly played on natural grass, gravel, and water based or sand based artificial turfs, with the help of a hard ball of small size. Field hockey is popular amongst both the females and males in various nations of the globe. In majority of the nations, field hockey can be played between unisex sides. There are some tournaments in which mixed-sex side also play hockey against each other. In nations, such as Canada and the United States, field hockey is mainly played by women. Governing Body of Hockey: The governing body of hockey is the 116 members International Hockey Federation or the FIH. Hockey was included in the game of Summer Olympics from the year 1908, with the exception of the year 1924. A 4000 year old painting in Egypt is indicative of the fact that, a game similar to the present hockey was played even in those days. |
